Description

Oliver Goldsmith's only novel tells of the follies, misfortunes, and joys of the Primrose family; at its centre is that fallible paragon the Vicar-the kindly and unworldly narrator. Though the plot is sentimental, this is in fact a special kind of comic novel: a story of suffering which we know, from the outset, will end happily. We read it as a domestic idyll, very like a fairy-tale, with a charm and humor which are irresistible. Recommended for grade 12. Oxford World's Classics 2008. 197 pp.
