Comments on this book by Dr. Mary Kay Clark: Like the other two books by Loula Grace Erdman of the Pierce family living in the Texas Panhandle in the late 1890's, this is the story presented from the viewpoint of one of the Pierce girls, this time fifteen-year-old Katie. The story begins with the wedding of Melinda and Dennis. Katie is the artistic one and looks forward to going to a girl's school in Lewsiville. But suddenly everything changes when her mother must leave the family to care for Grandmother, and Katie must take up the family responsibilities. These books present great family relationships, a true caring about family, and also a caring about friends. In addition, the stories are realistic in their detail about the difficulties of life in the late 1890's, which in itself makes the book worth reading. It is disappointing that God is entirely missing which, in reality, families struggling with the land, weather, and finding enough food and water supply surely spent time daily praying for God's mercy. Fairly fast-paced and interesting. Girls from 12 and up will enjoy all these books by Loula Grace Erdman.
